London zoo's pygmy hippos are on the move
Published: Sunday 18th of May 2008
In Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, they famously engage the services of a groundhog to predict when winter has finally ended. London Zoo has its very own four-legged seasonal barometer: the pygmy hippo.
Indeed, the migration of pygmy hippos from their warmer confines to the outdoor summer paddock is a clear sign that warmer weather is on its way and here to stay.
Nicola and Thug are the resident pygmy hippos at London Zoo. As their main pastimes involve sleeping, eating and taking a dip, the move can be quite an upheaval, so zookeepers have to take the utmost care to ensure the operation is as stress-free as possible.
Pygmy hippos are native to the swamps and forests of western Africa. Along with the hippopotamidae family, it is the last of the surviving hippopotamus species remaining in existence.
London city pass holders can go along and see Nicola and Thug, two prime examples of this endangered species, at the zoo for free.
