London attractions: Discover ice-cream and waterways at the London Canal Museum
Published: Thursday 8th of March 2012
At the centre, guests can peek inside a quaint narrowboat cabin, and learn the importance of canals to London's impressive history.
They will also gain a human perspective on the canals, learning about the people who lived and worked on the waterways, and the horses that pulled their boats.
In an interesting twist, the Canal Museum also contains a Victorian ice well, as the building in which it is situated was once an ice warehouse built around 1862-63 for Carlo Gatti, the famous ice-cream maker.
This means that as well as learning about the city's canals, visitors will also be educated on the history of the ice and ice-cream trade.
The museum also hosts talks on the subject of waterways, and on April 5th Rodger Clay will present an evening illustrated talk on The Avon Navigation and the challenge to reopen the old river.
