Things to do in London: Germander Speedwell at the Museum in Docklands

Published: Saturday 20th of March 2010

Those looking for things to do in London could head to the Museum in Docklands to catch an event celebrating World Poetry Day.

Germander Speedwell, a spoken-word artist, is running a Dockyard Dictionary event which promises to be a "wordy wander", mixing in a combination of nautical oddities and performances about the River Thames and its history.

She collects words and terms that are often overlooked or unexpected, which makes her performances highly entertaining.

The Museum in Docklands describes her work: "[She] crafts these into spoken word pieces in combinations that are packed with plosives, littered with alliteration, riddled with rhythm and resound with assonance."

Her favourite subjects are nautical topics, natural history and place names, with many of her pieces focusing on the Thames, which could make this the perfect opportunity for those looking for things to do in London.

Germander has performed on Resonance FM, talks at the Tate Modern and has featured in the Guardian.
