New exhibition for Museum in Docklands
Published: Friday 3rd of April 2009
A three-week exhibition on the history of the Port of London Authority (PLA) opened this week at the Museum in Docklands.
UK shipping minister Jim Fitzpatrick officially unveiled the exhibit, which marks 100 years of the PLA.
Entitled Port of London Authority: A Century of Service it gives visitors to the London museum the chance to see archive images and films of the PLA's operations as well as a new film showcasing its current work.
"This exhibition is not only a celebration of the PLA's achievements, but an important reminder that ports, like the Port of London, bring great benefits to us all," Mr Fitzpatrick said.
PLA chairman Simon Sherrard added that the PLA story has not yet finished, pointing out that it still plays a vital role in keeping the river open for navigation and helping people make the most of it.
A series of special events will take place alongside the exhibition, which runs to April 19th, to give visitors the chance to learn more about the PLA from the experts.
Created through an Act of Parliament in the early 1900s to bring chaos to the busy and congested port, the PLA continues to manage the Port of London, which is the second-biggest in the UK handling more than 50 million tonnes of cargo.
Visitors to London museums can benefit from a London Pass, saving them money and giving them special offers.
