Love and marriage renaissance-style at the Courtauld Gallery
Published: Tuesday 27th of January 2009
The eternally interesting and confounding subject of love is to be the focus of a new exhibition at a top London museum.
Love and Marriage in Renaissance Florence: The Courtauld Wedding Chests will be on show at the Courtauld Gallery in Somerset House from February 12th to May 17th.
Some of the exhibits will be on show for the first time in the UK, namely the wedding chests in the title, which were bought in the 15th century when Florentine patrician Lorenzo di Matteo Morelli married Vaggia di Tanai Nerli and bought the chests to celebrate the marriage.
These objects were underestimated by historians who did not think that they were part of the fine arts, but many have reviewed their stance, especially in how the chests can show what family was like in the palaces of Renaissance Florence.
Anyone wanting to see this amazing slice of art history, or are perhaps struggling to come up with gifts for a wedding, should come along.
Entry to the exhibition is included with admission to the Courtauld Gallery - which London Pass holders get for free.
