London mayor still supports 'ability to save on London attractions'
Published: Saturday 3rd of October 2009
London attractions such as the Tate and the Tate Modern will remain free entry, according to the Mayor of London Boris Johnson.
Mr Johnson was responding to claims from Labour's culture secretary Ben Bradshaw in the Times, which suggested that the Tory mayor wants to do away with free entry.
Responding to the claims, Mr Johnson said: "I did not advocate mandatory charges for national museums and galleries last week, but rather called for more voluntary donations by visitors who can afford them.
"It is important for the DCMS [Department of Culture, Media and Sport] and the GLA [Greater London Authority] to work together and this kind of political point-scoring makes that harder."
The mayor last year set out his initial vision of cultural activities and access to London attractions in his Cultural Metropolis.
Not all London attractions are free, but tourists can get free and discounted access to many when they purchase a London Pass.
