London attractions: Visit the toys of yesteryear at Pollock's Toy Museum
Published: Wednesday 7th of September 2011
Visitors looking for London attractions to take them on a trip back in time to the Victorian era should look no further than Pollock's Toy Museum.
A treasure trove of olden day toys is situated in two adjoining houses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Benjamin Pollock was the last of the Victorian Toy Theatre printers and a museum of his work was set up by Marguerite Fawdry who bought up his stock.
Staircase 1 is dedicated to board games, while the first room contains a host of optical, mechanical and construction toys.
Fans of old fashioned English tin toys and puppets will be at home in Room 2, which encompasses a selection of these.
Room 3 features wax and composition dolls and going on into the next space, visitors can see teddy bears, lead miniatures and delightful doll's houses.
Fascinating folk toys hailing from Europe are kept on the second staircase, for a more international perspective on the playthings of yesteryear.
The museum also encompasses dolls of china, wood, fabric and celluloid, English dolls and of course the toy theatres Pollock was renowned for printing.
