London attractions: Visit the London Transport Museum and see a century through posters
Published: Thursday 26th of July 2012
Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the rich design heritage of London's transport, and explore some of the 7,000 posters that were commissioned by Local Transport.
They will also be able to get up close to some of the original artworks that members of the public never get to see.
The first graphic poster was commissioned more than 100 years ago, and was entitled "No need to ask a P'liceman' (1908).
Since then, some of the world's best known artists have contributed to the transport network's collection of posters, including Man Ray, Abraham Games and Edward McKnight Kauffer.
Tours last approximately 75 minutes and include a question and answer section.
In total the museum depot houses an impressive 370,000 items, including rare road and rail vehicles which go back over 100 years, as well as the aforementioned poster and artwork stores and signs, ceramic tiles, bus and rail sheds, ephemera and ticket machines.
