London attractions: Steampunk it up at the Kew Bridge Steam Museum

Published: Thursday 16th of June 2011

People who admire a bit of oddball Victoriana artwork and are looking for things to do in London should visit the Kew Bridge Steam Museum, where the UK's largest exhibition of steampunk arts and crafts is on display.

A genre heavily influenced by science fiction and the steam-and-brass motifs of the 19th century, steampunk has adherents around the world, some of whom spend vast amounts of time and effort creating clockwork computers or steam-powered guitars.

The Greatest Steampunk Exhibition at Kew Bridge Steam Museum runs until August 29th and contains over 100 examples of the genre, from paintings to costumes and fantastic machines.

A competition will also be run to discover the best exhibit in various classes, as well as a steampunk concert, fashion show and science event.

The exhibition is jointly organised by the Kew Bridge Engines Trust and the Victorian Steampunk Society, and is a follow-up to last year's show at Oxford's Museum of the History of Science.
