London attractions: Gain a unique historical perspective at the Foundling Museum

Published: Tuesday 20th of September 2011

People looking for fascinating London attractions should opt for the Foundling Museum.

The museum encompasses two main collections - the Foundling Hospital Collection and the Gerald Coke Handel Collection.

For those interested in the history of the Foundling Hospital between its foundation in 1739 and its closure in 1954.

This encompasses significant paintings, sculpture, prints, manuscripts, furniture, clocks and historical documents.

The Gerald Coke Handel Collection, on the other hand, relates to the life and work of composer George Frideric Handel.

It was created by Gerald Coke and includes manuscripts, printed books and music, ephemere, coins, medals and works of art from between the eighteenth and twentieth century.

Furthermore, the Foundling Museum tells the story of the 25,000 children who were treated at the hospital.

Currently running at the centre is Foundling Voices, which features the stories of 74 former foundlings, whose memories of their childhoods in the first half of the twentieth century are preserved in audio interviews, photographs and film.
