London attractions: Experience war for yourself at the Firepower Royal Artillery Museum
Published: Wednesday 21st of September 2011
People looking for things to do in London could take a trip to the Firepower Royal Artillery Museum to learn more about the Gunners.
The Royal Arsenal has a long history, with stores first being set up in Woolwich in the 16th century under Henry VIII.
Visitors can get up close to the artillery that has been key in modern battles worldwide in the Gunnery Hall, which features weapons and vehicles from 20th century combat.
These include anti-aircraft, anti-tank, coastal defence, light and medium artillery, self propelled guns and missile launchers.
Interactive screens play videos of the guns in action with the regiment, and visitors can immerse themselves in the experience by completing their own mission.
In the Field of Fire exhibition, four huge screens play archive film and documentary footage from deserts and jungle warfare, the Blitz in London and the Normandy landing on D-Day.
To bring the experience to life, special effects including smoke, searchlight and audio are on hand.
