Last chance to see unique installation at Florence Nightingale Museum
Published: Thursday 11th of December 2008
Visitors have just a few weeks left to see a captivating art installation at one of London's top attractions, which is to close on January 1st.
The Florence Nightingale Museum is currently home to Miasma by Susie MacMurray, which consists of thousands of disposable latex gloves and bandages.
MacMurray's work is so named in response to the theory advocated by the famous nurse that diseases were spread by 'bad air' – termed 'miasma' – which it was thought could be countered by hygiene and ventilation.
While the theory was subsequently disproved it connected sanitation and disease and led to some important medical and scientific research.
The artist says of her work: "Nightingale made vast improvements in nursing and hygiene.
"The struggle for good practice in the battle against disease and infection continues throughout healthcare, enlisting legions of surgical gloves and sterile sutures against the likes of MRSA and C-Difficile".
Florence Nightingale is affectionately known as the 'Lady with the Lamp' following her tireless work in nursing injured soldiers during the Crimean War of the 19th century.
LondonPass holders can obtain free entry to the Florence Nightingale Museum, saving £5.80 for adults and £4.80 for children.
