Handel the Philanthropist revealed at the Foundling Museum
Published: Wednesday 4th of February 2009
A fascinating new exhibition has unveiled the giving nature of one of Europe's most respected composers.
Handel the Philanthropist at the Foundling Museum delves into the good works and donations made by this key figure of eighteenth century London society.
The exhibit, to mark the 250th anniversary of the composer's death in 1759, will focus on the charitable activity of Georg Frideric Handel.
Central to the event will be an examination of the contemporary resonance between Handel's activities and the philanthropy of our own era.
Now, as then, this kind of selfless behaviour can be a tremendous force for change in society and help those who otherwise would go hungry or homeless.
GF Handel co-established the Foundling Hospital – the memory which is preserved at the Foundling Museum – which sought to care for London's orphans.
LondonPass holders can explore the work of this great man and visit the Foundling Museum for free, saving £5 for adults, along with a discount on the Foundling guide book.
