Family-friendly museums in London
Published: Tuesday 30th of October 2012
Museums are not always renowned for being a hit with the kids but there are plenty of family-friendly options for people looking for things to do in London.
Providing an educational and entertaining experience, museums can be a brilliant day out, especially if the weather takes an unexpected turn for the worse.
Pollock's Toy Museum
The famous Pollock's Toy Museum opened in 1956 and is named after the iconic Benjamin Pollock, a printer of toy theatres who worked at the turn of the century.
Toy theatre, also known as paper theatre, was a highly popular art form back in the 1800s and allowed children to stage their own productions at home, often using puppets.
They featured intricate details, with cut-out sheets making up the scenery and various props and characters being used to illuminate the stories.
Pollock's Toy Museum has numerous displays of puppets, stages and theatres, all helping to bring to life this bygone era of family entertainment.
Children can also look on in wonder at the huge collection of toys from around the world, from impressive dolls houses to fully working train sets.
Each room has been given a theme so there should be something for all tastes, including mechanical toys, wax and composition dolls, china dolls, toy theatres, tin toys and puppets.
It's also very central and close to the Oxford St and Covent Garden Tube stations, making getting there particularly straightforward.
Every child likes cartoons and with the London Cartoon Museum dating back to the dawn of British cartoons in the 18th century, this is an attraction which will appeal to a wide audience.
It covers the history and development of British cartoons and brings them all the way up to the present day by using an exhaustive collection of different types, including caricatures, cartoon art and TV animation.
Altogether there are over 900 pieces on show and with regular events for children and adults this is a must-see destination for animation enthusiasts.
While the Cartoon Museum might appear to be a venue for children, adults with an interest in the fascinating graphic history of British satire can view material from a more academic standpoint, thanks to an extensive archive and reference library.
There are also adult lectures and exclusive courses on cartoons and how they are used within society and popular culture.
London Motor Museum
This is the premier museum in London for car enthusiasts, with a showroom full of classic cars dating from the 1930s to the present day.
It features a unique array of classic American cars, as well as exclusive models such as a Louis Vuitton Cadillac Deville and a Lincoln Continental Lowrider.
Children can compete against one another and their parents in the famous Car Geek Quiz in the 20ft custom built Rolls Royce, before then topping up their motoring knowledge by watching a documentary or two in the cinema room.
Plus, there are plenty of photo opportunities with some of the world's most famous automobiles, such as Ferraris, Aston Martins and Jaguars.
