Churchill's birthday sees great British leader remembered
Published: Saturday 6th of December 2008
Sunday November 30th marked the birthday of Sir Winston Churchill – wartime prime minister of Great Britain and a man who is considered by many as one of the greatest politicians and statesmen of the modern era.
Sir Winston took over the reigns of power in Britain when it had already been at war with the Axis for more than six months and it fell to him to guide the country to victory.
Following his first term as prime minister - ending in 1945, only a few weeks after VE-Day which had signalled a state of peace in Europe – Churchill was re-elected as the head of government in 1951, before retiring in 1955.
Sir Winston Churchill died aged 90 in 1965 and was granted a state funeral by the Queen.
The Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms in London celebrates the life and work of this inspirational man, with regular lectures and exhibitions aimed at giving an insight into this most revered of British political figures.
