British Museum 'unique and iconic'

Published: Wednesday 1st of April 2009

The British Museum has been described as a unique and iconic place for tourists in the capital to visit.

Speaking about the London museum, Jacqueline French, public relations manager for Visit London, says it is world renowned and features some incredible collections and artefacts, such as the Rosetta Stone.

"It is all round a really interesting museum," she states.

The British Museum attracts not only local visitors, but tourists from all over the world because it is so well known, Ms French continues.

Located on Great Russell Street, the London museum has its origins in the will of physician, naturalist and collector Sir Hans Sloane.

He wanted his collection of more than 71,000 objects, library and herbarium to be preserved and bequeathed them to King George II for the nation.

It now has nine different departments covering geographic regions and collections such as coins and medals, prints and drawings as well as Greek and Roman antiquities.

Visitors to the capital can get free entry to many London museums with a London Pass, giving them education and entertainment at a lower price.
