A biblical theme at London's fan museum

Published: Thursday 29th of January 2009

London museums cover just about every topic that can be imagined and the city even has one dedicated to fans, which is currently showing an exhibition on biblical influences.

The Fan Museum, in Greenwich is hosting Adam and Eve and Pinch Me, an exhibition which looks at fans depicting biblical events, with exhibits taken from the 17th century to the present day.

While the fans during the 17th and 18th century were not seen as religious objects, they were often decorated to show events from the Old Testament.

However, many of the fans which came from Holland at this time were deemed religious, with a special design helping to convey the story being represented.

Interestingly, some of the fans from the earlier time would feature flowers or other such pleasantries on one side, while on the other they could depict a horrific scene from the Bible, such as the bleeding head of Holofernes.

The exhibition runs at the Fan Museum until May 31st, and London Pass holders can save themselves the cost of the admission fee.
