Visit the 700-year-old Jewel Tower for things to do in London
Published: Saturday 10th of September 2011
Visitors to the capital looking for a historical building to work into their sightseeing schedule could opt for the fascinating Jewel Tower.
At over, 700 years old and with strong royal connections, the jewel tower is an intriguing London attraction for history buffs.
It was originally built around 1365 in order to house Edward II's treasures, and used to be known as the King's Privy Wardrobe.
The tower has particular historical significance as it was one of just two buildings from the medieval Palace of Westminster to survive the fire of 1834.
Architecture enthusiasts will enjoy the tower's 14th century ribbed vault and ornate ceiling carvings dating back to the 13th century.
Other highlights include an exhibition focusing on parliamentary history - 'Parliament Past and Present'.
Panels on the second floor tell of the tiny building's past and the history of weights and measures is also tackled.
