Things to do in London: St Paul's celebrates Royal Society anniversary
Published: Tuesday 25th of May 2010
A leading London attraction is to mark the founding of the prestigious Royal Society.
On June 9th, St Paul's Cathedral will host a special evensong to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the organisation, which is the UK's national academy of science.
Dr Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Canterbury, will deliver a sermon on the evening, while Edward Elgar's Great is the Lord, which was first performed at the Royal Society's 250th anniversary, will be sung by the Cathedral Choir.
St Paul's Cathedral canon chancellor Revd Dr Giles Fraser said he is "delighted" that the cathedral is joining in the society's anniversary celebrations.
"Both science and religion are rooted in a deep sense of wonder at the universe and an insatiable curiosity about life itself," he commented.
A range of other unique events are being held at top London attractions to celebrate the anniversary. On June 1st, the Chelsea Physic Garden will host a day examining the history and science of chocolate, while HMS Belfast will focus on the development of radar on July 8th.
