Save on sightseeing in London and visit Buckingham Palace: The home of jazz?
Published: Tuesday 4th of August 2009
Music fans on a sightseeing tour of London this summer could be surprised to see Buckingham Palace on their list of must-see buildings.
The home of the royal family is among the many venues nominated in the Brecon Festival poll of notable sites that have contributed to the development of British Jazz.
A concert held at Buckingham Palace in 1919 which King George V is believed to enjoyed, has led to the inclusion.
The event - a concert by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band - was the first jazz performance before a head of state.
It paved the way for other jazz concerts during his reign, including performances by Sidney Bechet and Louis Armstrong, who is said to have dedicated one song to the monarch with the words: "This one's for you, Rex".
King George V was not, however, a fan of opera, once informing the Grenadier Guards to never again play a particular extract he had not enjoyed. It was Richard Strauss's Elektra.
