Memories of Eton College

Published: Thursday 29th of May 2008

Eton College is one of the most famous and prestigious schools in the UK. Founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, its alumni includes many notable figures such as princes William and Harry, actor Hugh Laurie, George Orwell, the mayor of London Boris Johnson and a total of 19 British prime ministers.

The writer and journalist Harry Eyres commented in the Financial Times that he has "strong and complicated" feelings about the educational institution.

While many view Eton as a bastion of privilege and elitism, Mr Eyres claims it offers its students (for an annual fee of £26,490) freedoms and possibilities, from sporting activities to a plethora of guest speakers.

Tony Little, the current headmaster of the college, told Mr Eyres: "Eton College happens to be a rather good institution, which acts as a great standard-bearer for British liberal education."

London Pass card holders can get free admission to Eton College and enjoy a free guided tour.
