London celebrates Queen's birthday
Published: Wednesday 10th of June 2009
The Queen's official birthday will be marked in London this weekend with the Trooping the Colour.
Each year since 1820 the military parade has taken place in the capital to mark the celebration and give the monarch the chance to inspect the troops from the Household Division.
Starting at 10am at the Horse Guards Parade in St James's Park on Sunday, June 14th, the Queen will first give the troops the once-over, before leading them down the Mall to Buckingham Palace.
She then salutes and guns are fired in Green Park and the Tower of London, before joining other members of the royal family on the palace balcony to watch the RAF flypast.
Also at the Horse Guards Parade this week, the Massed Bands of the Royal Marines perform their Beating Retreat ceremony in celebration of the birthday of their Captain General, Prince Phillip.
Shows take place at 6.15pm until Thursday, June 11th.
While in London, visitors can see many of the capital's attractions for free with a London Pass.
