London attractions: Historic Tower of London
Published: Wednesday 1st of August 2012
Visitors looking for historic things to do London are sure to find it at the Tower of London.
Traditionally known as Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, the Tower of London is an epic castle situated on the picturesque north bank of the River Thames.
Built by William the Conqueror in 1078, the tower has historically been associated with power, first royalty and then parliamentary.
As such, the imposing tower is full of history, best known as being used as a de facto prison where many anti-establishment figures were sent to suffer.
It was damaged during the Second World War as the Germans blitzed London, but subsequently restored by Anthony Salvin John Taylor.
There's a lot to do at the tower today, including exploring royal armour, crown jewels and touring the notorious prisons.
What makes the Tower of London extra special is the fact that it is very engaging. You can, for example, lift a musket, draw a bow and arrow and pick up a sword.
