Kew Gardens welcomes new residents
Published: Wednesday 24th of June 2009
Two hives at Kew Gardens have welcomed 20,000 honeybees after the top London attraction went a year without the insects.
It will coincide with a campaign which is currently underway to get more people growing bee-friendly flowers in their gardens.
Disease and climate change are thought to have led to the demise of bees at Kew Gardens, although this new project is aimed at improving their chances and encouraging others to do the same.
According to the British Beekeepers' Association, about 70 crops in the UK are dependent on visits from bees, especially those which are harvested to feed animals.
Visiting Kew Gardens is free of charge thanks to the London Pass, which saves visitors £13 on the price of an adult ticket.
The attraction is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year, making it the ideal time to visit.
