Granddaughter of Churchill's cook to ride across US for charity

Published: Monday 2nd of June 2008

The granddaughter of Georgina Landemare, who spent the second world war as Winston Churchill's private cook in No 10 Downing Street and the Cabinet War Rooms, is to embark on an incredible journey for charity.

Eddie Brocklesby is part of five-member team - the average age of which is 60 - who will cycle more than 3,000 miles across the US from the Pacific to the Atlantic Coast.

Ms Brocklesby is raising money for her chosen charity, Parents for Children, which seeks to find permanent homes for young people with emotional, learning or physical disabilities.

Her grandmother began working for Churchill when she was 50 years old.

The war leader once had a premonition that a bomb would drop on his residence and went to send Georgina down to the air-raid shelter. She refused, insisting: "Sir, the souffle isn't quite done!"
