Delve into the fascinating history of Southwark Cathedral for things to do in London
Published: Sunday 6th of November 2011
A church is known to have stood on the site since AD 606, and possibly even further back than this, making it the oldest cathedral church building in London.
Archaeological evidence shows that there was Roman pagan worship on the site before the building was erected - making it a truly fascinating place to visit.
Southwark stands at the oldest crossing point of the tidal Thames, which was the only entrance to the City of London across the river for many centuries.
In its long history, the cathedral has been a sanctuary for everyone from princes to paupers, prostitutes, poets, playwrights, prisoners and patients.
With 2011 marking the 400th anniversary of the publication of the Authorised Version of the Bible in 1611, the cathedral has particular reason to celebrate.
Lancelot Andrews, a leading member of the committee that saw the translation of the King James Version of the Bible, is buried at the Cathedral.
