Big Ben celebrates 150th birthday
Published: Saturday 11th of July 2009
Today (July 11th) marks the 150th anniversary of Big Ben, one of London's top attractions.
The bell first tolled on this day in 1859 and is believed to have got its name from Benjamin Hall, the first commissioner of works and public buildings at the time.
His name is inscribed on the bell, which was initially coined Big Ben before it was extended to the rest of the iconic London structure.
The tower is set to be inscribed with a message saying Happy Birthday Big Ben, 150 years, 1859 - 2009, once the sun sets.
Visitors to London can see Big Ben and a whole host of other attractions with the London Pass, which gives free entry to some top sites.
Among them is Eton College, one of the most famous educational establishments in the UK which has been attended by 19 British prime ministers.
