Published: Thursday 16th of July 2009
A sofa believed to have belonged to Winston Churchill is to be auctioned off, it has emerged.
The late-19th century item of furniture is thought to have once been housed at his private Whitehall offices during his second term in office.
It was found during a house clearance by Jonathan Humbert of JP Humbert Auctioneers, who will be responsible for putting the item up for sale.
He commented: "The owner was an academic who lived in a rambling Georgian Rectory in a village in Northamptonshire.
"He was given it by a friend who in turn was given it by Winston Churchill himself."
Anyone interested in history and this prime minister in particular might want to consider a visit to the Churchill Museum & Cabinet War Rooms, which are free to enter with the London Pass.
Adults can save £12.95 on the price of an adult ticket and get behind the scenes of the nerve centre of Britain's war effort.
