Van Gogh exhibition launched at London attraction

Published: Monday 25th of January 2010

Art lovers with a passion for the works of Vincent van Gogh should take time out of their London sightseeing schedule to visit a new exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts.

The Real Van Gogh: The Artist and His Letters opened on Saturday (January 23rd) and runs until April 18th.

More than 35 letters written by the artist are on display alongside around 65 paintings and 30 drawings that express the themes of these letters.

Most of the letters in the exhibition are written by van Gogh to his art-dealer brother Theo but some are written to other family members and other artists, including Anton van Rappard, Emile Bernard and Paul Gauguin.

Between November 1881 and July 1890, van Gogh is thought to have painted almost 900 paintings.

An evening talk is taking place this Friday (January 29th) in the Large Weston Room of the London attraction. Author and van Gogh scholar Wouter van der Veen will talk about the author's literary influences and will offer an unconventional approach to van Gogh's work.
