Secret details discovered on painting at the Tate Britain
Published: Monday 29th of December 2008
A painting in which hidden details including two cherubs have been revealed is to go on display at Tate Britain, it has been reported.
John Hayls' A Portrait of a Lady and a Boy with Pan was acquired by the organisation in 1995 and has been the subject of a recent restoration.
Nothing seemed untoward until some cross-checking revealed a catalogue listing from a 1929 auction which referred to details not visible on the painting, reports the Daily Telegraph.
A spokesman for the Tate told the paper: "Whether they were overpainted due to early twentieth-century prudery, or to conceal a change of colour in the pigments used for the sky, is a mystery."
The newly-restored work will be exhibited as part of the Van Dyck and Britain event at the gallery from February 2009.
