New sight to see at the Courtauld Gallery

Published: Monday 7th of July 2008

The Courtauld Gallery, one of a number of popular London attractions, has announced an addition to its current display.

Sculptor Sir Anthony Caro has gifted the gallery with his Table Piece CLXXXV, 1974.

Describing the donation as an "important gift", Ernst Vegelin, head of The Courtauld Gallery, noted his appreciation to Sir Anthony for his "generosity".

"This is the first major work by a living artist to enter the collection in over a generation. Developing the 20th century collections at the highest level of quality is a key objective for the Gallery and this work is a wonderful addition," he commented.

Sir Anthony is known for his brightly painted welded sculptures of the 1960s and his fondness for industrial material.

In Italy he began his work with soft edge roll-end steel and once returned to the UK sourced much of this from a factory in County Durham.

London Pass holder can receive free entry to this exciting exhibit at the Courtauld Gallery.
