New Tate Modern plans submitted
Published: Saturday 17th of January 2009
Plans for the transformation of one of the capital's most popular visitor attractions have been submitted to the authorities.
The £215 million expansion of Tate Modern on London's Bankside is intended to be complete by the London 2012 Olympics and is being designed by world-famous architects Herzog and de Meuron.
Much of the logic behind the expansion is the unprecedented success of the current attraction.
Designed for only 1.8 million visitors, the gallery has averaged 4.6 million in recent years and as such the gallery is looking to provide more space and better facilities for the public.
The new wing, called Tate Modern 2, will incorporate existing oil tanks redolent of the area's industrial heritage and will rival the existing buildings Turbine Hall in terms of scale and as a dramatic space to fill with innovative work.
