London attractions: Wyndham Lewis at the Courtauld Gallery
Published: Sunday 27th of November 2011
Running until January 15th, the exhibition amounts to one of the most important collections of works by the British avant-garde artist and writer Wyndham Lewis.
The display celebrates the recent acquisition of Lewis' radical early self-portrait drawing from 1911, in which the artist asserted himself as a hard-edged and modern artist.
It explores the era where he founded the avant-garde 'Vorticists', who aimed to radicalise British art.
Later works seen in the exhibition illustrate Lewis' efforts to challenge and reinvent the landscape of painting and drawing, with his work becoming increasingly imaginative and sometimes fantastical.
However, according to the museum, one of Lewis' most important contributions to 20th century British art was through portraits.
The mysterious painting of his wife - known as Red Portrait - powerfully demonstrates this.
