London Attractions: See the Antarctic at The Queen's Gallery
Published: Wednesday 9th of November 2011
David Attenborough's Frozen Planet series on BBC1 is reigniting interest in some of the world's most extreme climates, and an exhibition in London is portraying the frozen wastes of the far south.
Running until April 12th 2012, the exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of Captain Scott's journey to the South Pole.
An audio guide by David Hempleman-Adams, one of the world's foremost polar explorers, gives visitors more information on photographers Herbert George Ponting and Frank Hurley, whose work features extensively in the collection.
Some of the images records Captain Scott's Terra Nova expedition, which resulted in the deaths of five men, as well as the icescapes taken from Ernest Shackleton's Polar expedition on Endurance between 1914 and 1917.
A selection of other Polar material from the Royal Collection is presented alongside the exhibition, as well as paintings inspired by the Duke of Edinburgh's visit to Antarctica in 1956-7.
