Innovative South African artist debuts in London
Published: Sunday 23rd of November 2008
One of the most pioneering artists from the African continent is to unveil his first exhibition in the UK at Tate Modern next month.
Nicholas Hlobo's work renders experiences of living in post-apartheid South Africa and is shot through with references to the fables and linguistic lyricism of the native Xhosa language.
The work brings out the ethereal from the everyday in its use of such found items as car tyres and scraps of leather to root conceptual considerations in the stuff of daily life, endless examining and re-examining the relationship between the two.
The artist will exhibit in the Level Two Gallery at the gallery from December 9th until March 1st 2009.
Tate Modern is both one of the most famous and controversial art galleries in the world and has been a consistent source of praise and criticism since it opened in a disused power station on London's Bankside in 2000.
LondonPass holders can take advantage of a free audio tour, saving £2 for adults and £1 for children.
