Published: Monday 30th of July 2012
People who are heading on family trips to London will be happy to hear the capital city has plenty of attractions that will enthral and delight the kids, while also keeping the grown-ups entertained. Whether they are seeking educational landmarks, engaging museums or just some good old fashioned fun, London really does have it all.
1. Get in the Field of Fire at Firepower Royal Artillery Museum
The Firepower Royal Artillery Museum is the perfect mix of education and fun to please both parents and kids alike. In the Field of Fire section, visitors can find out what it's really like to be a modern Gunner in war time. The exhibition encompasses four massive screens running archive footage of desert and jungle warfare, anti-aircraft guns protecting London during the infamous 'Blitz', and the bombardment of the Normandy landing. The experience really comes to life through a combination of smoke in the air, searchlights picking out nearby artillery and the sound of exploding bombs, which are so loud they shake the floor.
Elsewhere in the museum, people can learn the history of the Gunners and visit some of the machinery they use in modern warfare, as well as that what was used in some of the most famous battles ever.
2. Visit the colourful and exotic animals of London Zoo
It's difficult to find a child who doesn't love animals, and London Zoo offers a fantastic day out for families, boasting some of the most interesting animals in the world. The zoo is home to more than 750 different species of animal, and visitors can go see some of their favourites. Animal enthusiasts can dive into Penguin Beach, where they can see the adorable birds feed, swim and sun themselves. Alternatively, head over to gorilla kingdom to see the majestic monkeys, or choose to visit the intriguing Komodo dragons. There is also an aquarium full of colourful sea life and underwater flora and fauna, while many people are fascinated by the giraffes. Predictably, plenty of zoo visitors head straight over to the Big Cats enclosure, where there are lions, serval and tigers, and no doubt the meerkats are proving popular at the moment.
3. Enjoy some good old fashioned fun at Queen's Ice and Bowl
Queen's Ice and Bowl has long been a favourite with families and it is easy to see why, with numerous fun options on offer for an action-packed day.
People who enjoy gliding around on the ice can head straight to the centre's innovative ring, which boasts real ice. It encompasses cutting-edge colour change lighting and puts on special-effect light shows.
After exhausting themselves on the ice rink, visitors can head over to the bowling lanes where they can try and beat their friends and family at the sport. Queen's has 12 lanes of full-size Ten Pin Bowling, along with state of the art scoring and extreme lighting.
Meanwhile, wannabe pop stars will no doubt already be over at the karaoke bar, making the most of the centre's 5,000 songs and state of the art technology. The private karaoke rooms are designed to hold between 12 and 20 individuals, and boast touchscreen song selections, plasma screens, play list functions, pitch and speed functions, comfy seating and excellent refreshments.
