Embark on a photographic odyssey at the Tate Modern
Published: Friday 16th of May 2008
It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words and the Tate Modern in London will soon put that dictum to the test.
Street & Studio: An Urban History of Photography opens at the gallery on Tuesday 22nd May and runs until Sunday 31st August 2008.
Comprised of more than 300 work by photographers from the 19th and 20th centuries, the exhibition takes a fascinating look at a diverse array of street photography from cities all over the world.
Featured photographers include Diane Arbus, Cecil Beaton, Brassaï, Walker Evans, Helen Levitt, Robert Mapplethorpe, Irving Penn, Cindy Sherman, Malick Sidibe, Wolfgang Tillmans and Weegee (aka Arthur Fellig).
British actor Dirk Bogarde once said: "The camera can photograph thought. It's better than a paragraph of sweet polemic." Visitors to the Tate Modern can test Bogarde's theory out. London Pass card holders can also enjoy a free audio tour of the gallery.
