Browse decorative arts at the Courtauld Gallery
Published: Monday 19th of March 2012
People visiting the Courtauld Gallery for things to do in London will no doubt anticipate browsing paintings and sculptures - but they could also spend some time perusing the institution's collection of decorative arts.
Items in the exhibition hail from both Europe and the Middle East, with Italian Renaissance wedding chests being on show alongside marble reliefs and a vast collection of tin-glazed earthenware called maiolica from the renaissance.
The Courtauld also houses spectacular collections of Iznik and Spanish lustreware ceramics, as well as impressive objects of Islamic metalwork including pieces by master craftsman Mahmud the Kurd.
The silver collection is also well worth a look, being designed and made by three generations of the Courtauld family in the 18th century, with highlights including luxury silverware for domestic use.
Sculptures are another high-point at the gallery, which houses a wide-ranging collection from Antiquity to the 20th century.
