Attractions in London: Courtauld Gallery to restore masterpiece
Published: Tuesday 7th of December 2010
Cain Slaying Abel, which was created by Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens in the 17th century, will undergo works to repair its uneven surface and areas where paint has been lost.
As well as restoring the great work to its former glory, the conservation process will give artists a unique opportunity to perform a technical assessment of Rubens' techniques.
"The conservation of Cain Slaying Abel will preserve an extremely important work by one of the world's best-known artists, and will ensure that the painting can once more be on display for the benefit and enjoyment of our many visitors," said Dr Ernst Vegelin, head of the Courtauld Gallery.
Last month, the gallery also announced that it had received £600,000 from the International Music and Art Foundation (IMAF) to create the IMAF Centre for the Study and Conservation of Drawings.
