Visit the second oldest botanical garden in Britain for things to do in London
Published: Thursday 31st of January 2013
Named after the science of healing, the rock alpine garden it features is actually the oldest of its kind in England, whilst the largest fruiting olive tree in the country is grown here also.
The site was the original location of Danvers House; its garden eventually being leased to the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in 1722, under the condition that the garden supplied the Royal Society with 50 herbarium samples each year.
By this point, it was the richest botanic garden in the area, while a seed-exchange programme with Dutch botanist Paul Hermann not only introduced cotton in the colony of Georgia but also caused the worldwide spread of the Madagascar Periwinkle.
Becoming a registered charity in 1983, the garden was opened to the public and is now one of the biggest London attractions available.
Take a walk on the wild side this year and explore Chelsea Physic Garden.
