Things to do in London: Buckingham Palace Summer Opening
Published: Thursday 18th of July 2013
It's not every day you get to visit the dwelling places of kings and queens, particularly when it comes to Buckingham Palace, the most famous of them all.
If you are out and about this season, looking for things to do in London, then why not pop down for the summer opening of the palace?
The residence is one of the world's few remaining working royal palaces, which opens its doors to the public every year and gives visitors the chance to gain a unique insight into the life of the reigning monarch.
Guests will get a chance to explore the extravagantly furnished state rooms, gardens, ballrooms and the throne room.
One of the highlights of the visit is the sheer number of artistic national treasures that are on display.
Most of the paintings that visitors to the palace will see during their trip come from the Royal Collection at the palace.
These will include masterpieces by renowned artists such as Rubens, Vermeer, Poussin, Canaletto, Rembrandt and Claude.
The palace is also home to some of the finest furniture in the world from the UK and overseas.
There will also be sculptures from famous figures such as Canova and Chantrey for visitors to admire.
But perhaps one of the most special reasons to pay a visit to the palace is to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Queen's coronation, which occured in 1953.
The coronation festival recently took place in the gardens at Buckingham Palace, but now visitors will be able to explore the inside too.
During the festival, designers and exhibitors from all over the country came together to celebrate over 60 years of tradition. The festival ended on July 14th, but that was really only the beginning.
Because now guests can get a special insider's view of the magnificent stately home, where they can see the original white satin dress which the queen wore during the 1953 coronation, as well as the diamond diadem, one of the queen's most recognisable jewels.
The palace will open its doors for the summer opening from July 27th until September 29th.
