Peruse the Tate Modern's Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde show for things to do in London

Published: Friday 31st of August 2012

Art lovers seeking things to do in London will enjoy a visit to the Tate Modern, which is hosting an aesthetically stunning exhibition entitled Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde.

It is particularly fitting that this exhibition should be hosted by the Tate Modern, with the pioneering Pre-Raphaelites being Britain's first modern art movement.

The innovative artists combined beauty and imaginative grandeur with scientific precision and, most importantly, rebellion, to create some striking pieces of art.

This exhibition brings together more than 150 works in various mediums, from painting and sculpture to photography and the applied arts in the genre.

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) was led by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, who were known for rebelling against the artistic establishment of the mid-nineteenth century, instead looking back to the decadence early Renaissance painting.

This exhibition, which is running from September 12th until January 13th, studies the PRB as an early example of avante-garde, exploring how the artists self-consciously overturned orthodoxy to create new standards for contemporary art.
