London attractions: Visit the medieval Jewel Tower
Published: Tuesday 29th of January 2013
It was originally commissioned by Edward III around 1365 and was intended to house the king's personal treasures, also being known as the King's Privy Wardrobe.
What makes it so special? It is one of just two surviving buildings from the medieval Palace of Westminster, with the other one being Westminster Hall.
Architecture fans will be delight by the tower's charming 14th century ribbed vault.
Within the quaint tower, visitors will discover a fascinating exhibition covering the history of parliament entitled Parliament Past and Present.
The second floor includes panels telling the story of the building itself, while there is also a display on the history of weights and measures.
What's more, the Jewel Tower sits in the heart of Westminster, meaning it is surrounded by plenty more attractions, including the Churchill War Rooms, the Household Cavalry Museum and Westminster Abbey.
