London attractions: Learn the fascinating history of Chislehurst Caves

Published: Friday 21st of December 2012

Going down a cave may not be everyone's idea of a festive activity, but people who visit Chislehurst Caves for things to do in London will not be disappointed by their extensive history.

Visitors are treated to a lamp-lit tour into the extensive caves, which are manmade tunnels dating back to before the 13th century, when they were first mentioned in records.

They have had numerous functions over the ages, from being an ammunition depot associated with the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich in the First World War to being used for mushroom cultivation in the 1930s.

In the sixties they were used as a quirky music venue, with the likes of David Bowie, Status Quo, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd all performing there.

However, it is believed that the history of the caves goes all the way back to the Saxon, Druid and Roman days - so it is a great option for history buffs to visit.
