London attractions: Enjoy a family day out in Apsley House

Published: Tuesday 19th of March 2013

If you want to see a truly stunning example of 15th century art, then Apsley House should be on your go-to list of London attractions.

The house was built between 1771 and 1778 and is said to be one of the most spectacular grand houses in the city.

It is also known as the No. One and was the home of the Wellesleys from 1807. The house is best known as the home of the Duke of Wellington and the family still maintain private rooms in the house.

This makes the house fairly unique as it is the only property owned by English Heritage where the owners still reside.

The attraction contains paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, Caravaggio, Wilkie and Lawrence, to name a few. The paintings were acquired by the Duke following his military victories over Napoleon by grateful European royalty. Interestingly, the house also contains a large nude statue of Napoleon outside of the building.
