London attractions: Don't miss the Jubilee Concert at Westminster Abbey
Published: Friday 7th of June 2013
If you are looking for interesting things to do in London over the next week, then be sure not to miss out on the Jubilee Concert at Westminster Abbey.
The 60th anniversary of the Queen's Coronation will be marked with this special service of celebration at the abbey.
Also known as the gala concert, it is set to be held on June 13th, at 7pm. It will celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The concert is a must-see for avid fans of classical music and those with even a passing interest in British cultural heritage and tradition.
It will be performed by the choir of Westminster Abbey, conducted by organist and master of the choristers James O'Donnell.
Some of the famous classical masterpieces that will be played there include pieces by Purcell, Handel, Parry and Walton.
Westminster Abbey is known for hosting grand occasions such as this and was the venue for royal weddings - including the recent wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
Located just a short distance from the river Thames, the abbey has played host to monarchs, famous poets, aristocrats, heads of state and archbishops.
A number of events will be taking place there over the next few months, to honour the 60th anniversary of the coronation including photographic exhibitions, featuring portraits of the queen; as well as various displays of rare treasures and collectibles which will be made available for public viewing and lectures.
This includes the '60 Chairs for 60 Years' exhibition, which will run up until September 27th. It features a collection of miniature chairs, which were made at the time of the 1953 coronation.
Another event that will take place at the abbey is one called Picture the Procession, which is a community-led photography project produced by Westminster Adult Education Services. It features photographs of the abbey, and other important sites in London and is set to be on display until June 28th.
