London attractions: Discover the early 19th century at the Fan Museum
Published: Thursday 31st of January 2013
The Fan in Europe 1800-1850 offers an insight into a time in the history of fans that has been, rather undeservedly, overlooked.
This era saw plenty of social and political upheaval in Europe, with the Napoleonic wars echoing across the continent and affected life everywhere.
So, what did this mean for fans? Well, as fan makers downed tools and went off the join the military, it would seem that the 'golden-age' of fan making was at an end.
Fans from this era appear to reflect the worries of the people of the time, with ivory, tortoiseshell and precious gems making way for bone, horn and sequins.
Although the materials used to fashion the fans were now less luxurious, creativity and ingenuity remained, and people visiting this exhibition will see the real hopes, fears and aspirations of the people at the time reflected in the fans.
