London attractions: Chelsea Physic Garden is splendid in autumn

Published: Sunday 7th of October 2012

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of year to spend a few hours in the great outdoors, and Chelsea Physic Garden is certainly one of the most splendid London attractions during this season.

A garden with a difference, Chelsea Physic Garden was founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries and to this day its living collection is based composed of approximately 5,000 different edible, useful, historical and medicinal plans.

It was originally designed for training apprentices in identifying plants but soon became one of the most significant centres of botany in the world.

Its unique warm microclimate means that it contains many plants that would not be able to survive in other areas of London. Highlights include Britain's largest outdoor fruiting olive tree and the world's most northerly outdoor grapefruit tree.

Pomegranates, ginkgos, mulberries and eucalyptus plants and trees also populate the grounds.
