London attractions: See how the children of the past played at Pollock's Toy Museum
Published: Monday 10th of December 2012
If you're looking for things to do in London with the kids, why not pay a visit to Pollock's Toy Museum? Educational and fun, this collection shows youngsters how the children of the past entertained themselves in the days before Xboxes and iPhones.
Situated in the heart of Fitzrovia, two houses - one from the 18th century and one from the 19th - are joined together to make up the museum.
The small rooms all house a treasure trove of toys from days gone by, and all are connected by narrow winding staircases, giving people the feeling they really have been transported back in time.
On staircase one, visitors will discover some old fashioned board games, and heading into the first room, there are a range of optical, mechanical and construction toys on show.
Room two houses some English tin toys and puppets, while room three features wax and composition dolls.
Meanwhile, there are teddy bears, lead miniatures and doll's houses in room four, staircase two plays home to European folk toys and room five features dolls made from a whole range of materials including china, wood, fabric and celluloid.
