London attractions: See flamingos at the London Wetland Centre
Published: Monday 1st of August 2011
People looking for things to do in London that put them in touch with the natural world should head to the London Wetland Centre, where staff were recently delighted by the hatching of a baby flamingo.
The chick was only the second lesser flamingo that has been hatched by them in captivity, and while the birth was a happy occasion, it underlines the troubles faced by the birds in the wild.
While anybody can go to the London Wetland Centre to see flamingos, workers at the facility warned that the wild population in Africa is under serious threat from industrialisation.
Plans to create a soda ash factory at Lake Natron in Tanzania could endanger thousands of native birds, staff said.
"Lesser flamingos lay only one egg at each attempt – and we know that disturbance can have a marked effect on breeding success," explained Wildlife and Wetlands Trust chief executive Martin Spray.
"Any changes at Lake Natron could very quickly bring about a catastrophic decline."
London Wetland Centre visitors will also see the return of the centre's photography competition on September 1st, which this year celebrates the centenary of the Scott Antarctic Expedition.
